Stoicism is actually a philosophy. But, more importantly its a practical philosophy. You can apply the principles of your life to improve further. Personally, I love stoicism. Its give you a mental tools to deal with your life and problems. Life is struggle between internal and external. If you recognize or overcome the problems, you rise up. Stoicism gives a strong mental tools, everyone should know this.
1: Control what is in your control and leave the rest:
What is in our control ? Actions, Thoughts and Interpretations. Most of the things in our life is not in our control but we worry about that such as natural disasters or others person’s actions. The key thing here is, change your perspective. We’ve always controlled by our emotions. Switch your mind into neutral and see the things in upside down. You can find positive thing. Our Actions, Thoughts and interpretations decides the perception of our world.
Swami Vivekananda said,
“It is our own mental attitude which makes the world what it is for us.Our thoughts make things beautiful, our thoughts make things ugly. The whole world is in our own minds. Learn to see things in the proper light. First, believe in this world – that there is meaning behind everything. Everything in the world is good, holy and beautiful. If you see something evil, think that you are not understanding the world in right light. “
2: Don’t be lazy
First, you should realize you’re human. You’ve a lot of potential than other living things. But, still you don’t put the hard work. Every animals do their work but you don’t. It’s very shame. I’m also spitting on my face in the mirror because of this.
In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius said,
At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I am rising to do the work of a human being. What do I have to complain about, if I’m going to do what I was born for—the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”
— But it’s nicer here …
So were you born to feel “nice”? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren’t you running to do what your nature demands?
— But we have to sleep sometime…
Agreed. But nature set a limit on that — as it did on eating and drinking. And you’re over the limit. You’ve had more than enough of that. But not of working. Then you’re still below your quota.
You don’t love yourself enough. For if you did, you’d love your nature too, and what it demands of you. People who love what they do wear themselves down doing it, they even forget to wash or eat. Do you have less respect for your own nature than the engraver does for engraving, the dancer for the dance, the miser for money or the social climber for status? When they’re really possessed by what they do, they’d rather stop eating and sleeping than give up practicing their arts
Is helping others less valuable to you ? Not worth your effort ?
I read this over and over.Because I believe in power of words.
3: Don’t Worry about others:
The easiest way to fail is fearing about what others think. I’m already said in this article about, why you not think about others. Gary Vaynerchuk said, “ Every second you spend thinking about what somebody else has is taking away from time that you could create something for yourself”
Peoples who are hurting you or criticizing are don’t know about you fully. They even don’t care about you. Then why you want to think about them. It’s complete waste of time. Marcus Aurelius said, ” Ignore what’s going on in other people’s soul – no one ever came to grief that way. But if you won’t keep track of what your own souls doing, how can you not be unhappy.
At the same time, you should be prepared for those peoples. Because, you may encounter those kind of peoples daily. You should train your mind for that. Marcus Aurelius gives you little mental training.
“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They’re like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer have a nature related to my own – not of the same blood or birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor I can feel angry at my relative or hate him. We were born together like feet, hand and eyes like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are obstructions. “
These are the three principles of stoicism that I like most. And considered, most powerful ones.
